  • Gilliatt is a gorgeous, woollen-spun merino yarn spun from a blend of French Mérinos d'Arles wool from Provence and black Portuguese merino from the Alentejo Valley.

Made up of three well-twisted strands, Gilliatt is satisfyingly round, soft and lofty. Its Worsted/Aran weight makes it wonderfully versatile, working beautifully for everything from simple stocking stitch to intricate cables. It is also forgiving of irregularities, doesn't split easily and stays securely on the needles, which makes it a great choice for beginners and experienced knitters alike.

The natural shades created by blending white and brown fleeces, including Sel, Poivre Blanc, Poivre et Sel and Poivre, alongside a range of subtly heathered and dyed colours. It's amazing for sweaters, cardigans and accessories where you want the character of a traditional woollen-spun yarn.

In line with re rerum natura's ethical standards, the sheep are raised with consideration for animal welfare. At least 50% of the wool is certified organic across the colour range. The yarn is, of course, mulesing-free.

Care: Gilliatt is not superwash treated. De Rerum Natura recommends washing your finished knitting in warm water with soap or a suitable detergent, then drying flat without rubbing or stretching. If you're considering using a washing-machine wool cycle, test your swatch first. As with all yarns, very dark or saturated shades, including Emeraude, may release excess dye during blocking, so test your swatch before combining colours, particularly with lighter shades.

There are over 24,500 projects on Ravelry using this yarn, at the last count. Check them out here.

PS - this yarn is produced at a small mill with precious fleeces, so not all colours are in stock all the time. We order in the colours as they become available, but we don't always know when that will be.

  • De Rerum Natura is a French yarn company specialising in European merino wool, with an emphasis on traceability and reducing the environmental impact of production.

Gilliatt combines French Mérinos d'Arles wool from Provence with black Portuguese merino from the Alentejo Valley. According to Loop Knitting, the flocks are raised using traditional farming practices, including transhumance — the seasonal movement of sheep between grazing grounds. At least 50% of the wool used across the colour range is certified organic, and the yarn is mulesing-free.

The wool is sourced in France and Portugal, washed in Belgium or Italy, then spun and dyed in France. The mill in Rougnat uses a phyto-purification system to filter wastewater, and its dyes comply with European REACH regulations.
