ITO Washi follows the tradition of noble Japanese paper yarns with a silky softness. The paper is twisted with a rayon thread which gives the necessary stability to fabric. Washi is washable. We recommend handwashing, as usual.
Paper yarns have a lasting tradition in Japan. They are often compared to silk in their noble character and have similar properties to silk: Cooling in summer and warming in winter. Washi can be used single stranded lightweight summer garments. For shirts and jackets we recommend Washi double stranded or in combination with other Ito yarns, like Kinu or Sensai.
ITO Washi will completely changes once you knit it, and again when you block it.
At first touch, it feels crisp, dry and almost paper-like (unsurprisingly...). But on the needles and especially after washing, Washi transforms into a fabric that is surprisingly soft, cool, light and beautifully wearable.
Spun from a clever blend of 54% Paper and46% Viscose, this yarn has an incredibly modern feel and a fabric unlike almost anything else in knitting.
The “paper” element comes from very fine Japanese washi paper, which gives the yarn its signature dry texture, subtle structure and airy lightness. But don’t panic - it won't fall apart in the rain!
The fibres are extremely fine and flexible, resulting in garments that feel elegant, breathable and refined. The yarn has a good stitch definition, so it's great for lace and a clean, architectural quality.
It's super lovely in warmer weather. The fabric feels cool against the skin, with lovely drape but also enough body to hold shape beautifully. Perfect for contemporary Summer garments, oversized silhouettes and relaxed textured knits.
It also has a very distinctive visual quality. Washi creates fabric with a softly matte finish and subtle organic texture that feels sophisticated rather than shiny or overly polished.
Washi is so light for its meterage, garments feel almost weightless to wear.
The palette is classic ITO: sophisticated, nuanced and easy to combine across the range.
Washi is beautiful all on its own for lightweight garments and accessories with structure and drape, but it also pairs brilliantly with other ITO yarns if you want to experiment with texture, softness and fabric contrast.
