    Fiddlehead Fern Silk AK-20

    • Such an unusual soft silk with a kind of rustic charm thanks to the fiddlehead fern fibre mixed in it. This is a very traditional yarn from the northern part of Japan, Niigata.

This precious silk is a result of very patient recycling. Farmers go out onto the mountain in the Spring to collect edible ferns. There is a brown fibre on the ferns which needs to be picked out before they cook. The farmers will never throw the fibre out, but let it pile in the kitchen. It always gets used as an accent for the silk they spin later.

This yarn is wonderful for lace knitting, a good weft yarn and very rare to find these days.

We love the yarn on its own for an ethereal lacy fabric, held double or triple for a fine Summer garment, or even held together with another luxury yarn like Habu Cashmere N-86.

    • Why?

Do we bother to take so much time and labor... actually weaving or knitting when there are so many good machine woven fabrics or knit wears? They are durable, inexpensive...

      Why?

Because we must stubbornly believe all the care our actual hands give to each and every process of making a length of fabric creates something more than just a "look."

It may be subtle, but you know when you wear and touch. You know when that fabric ages with you. You feel the thought of that person, who made it for you.

We carry “slow” materials, not flashy, not necessary pretty, not cheap, not easy, but those that will give a soul to the fabrics.

We would like to offer you the best and unique, rarely available. It took us many trips and years to discover & cultivate them. You do not have to do that. They are here.

I hope you enjoy them as much as I do.
