It can remain in the environment for decades after it's discarded.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eBiodegradable polyamide has been engineered differently. Its molecular structure has been modified so that \u003cem\u003enaturally occurring microorganisms can break it down\u003c\/em\u003e much more efficiently at the end of its life, while still retaining the strength, flexibility and durability needed for everyday use.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eWill it biodegrade in my yarn stash?\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eNo.\u003cbr\u003eBiodegradable polyamide is designed to remain stable throughout the life of the yarn. It only begins to break down when exposed to the specific conditions required for biodegradation, including moisture, microorganisms and elevated temperatures. A skein stored in a dry cupboard isn't exposed to those conditions, so it won't slowly degrade while it's waiting to be knitted.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eFor us, it's a sensible compromise. We still wish nobody needed synthetic fibres in sock yarn, but if we're going to use one, we'd much rather choose one that's designed with its end of life in
