This new yarn by Garthenor is a labour of love. A buttery blend of Polwarth, Hebridean and Romney yarns, and worsted spun, Preseli is perfect for socks, shawls and sweaters! In fact, Garthenor claim it as their most versatile yarn!
A full 18 months in the making, this gorgeous 4ply yarn is fully Certified Organic (GOTS) and very, very special!
We LOVE how much love goes into every yarn they produce. Every fibre is completely traceable and ethically sourced with the highest respect for the animals, humans and environment. Garthenor yarns are imbued with integrity you can literally feel in every skein.
The Polwarth comes from Dunbar Island, part of the Falkland Islands, famed for the snow white superfine fleece. These sheep produce a long, smooth fibre that has excellent stitch definition and soaks up dye like a sponge.
The Polwarth is lifted by some Romney, sourced from a flock in Wiltshire. This lustrous longwool was chosen specifically to add structure and some complexity to the blend.
The Hebridean is grown in Gwent and the Scottish HIghlands and has been added in (10%) to some of the colours where a lovely heathery silver-grey base was required.
The yarn's second was is where the final magical touch happens: soft, Welsh spring water bubbles up at the top of the Garthenor farm, and is the secret to bulking and relaxing their yarns, allowing them to breathe. The transformation at this step is stunning - from an oily, firm yarn into the gorgeous skeins they sell.
Garthenor organic is an independent, family run designer and manufacturer of ethical, Certified Organic (GOTS) yarns, based in the Cambrian Mountains of Wales.
The wonderful mother and son team have produced exclusively certified organic, breed specific UK-made yarns for 20 years. In 2003, they became the first company in the world to produce fully certified organic wool yarns.
Always driven by passion, they believe the yarn they make captures the identity of our landscape.
We LOVE how much love goes into every yarn they produce. They know intimately every single thing about each and every fibre and exactly where it comes from. Garthenor yarns are imbued with integrity you can feel in every skein.
Climate Positive For every skein of yarn they produce, they offset about twice the carbon footprint through sustainable, ethical initiatives, as well as responsible farming practices.
They also offset their own footprint - things like travelling to shows, electricity usage and heating.
When paired with uncompromising animal welfare, traceability and organic certification throughout, they are confident of doing our bit to help the planet.
