Learn to Weave: Workshop 1, Sunday 19th January

6 items left
  • Sunday 19th January 2020: 10am - 1pm

We are SO excited to be able to offer this amazing, epic class, taught by the one and only Nicky Winterton, aka @clarapeggoty (instagram).

This is the first in a series of 4 workshops at Tribe. Spaces are very limited and sell out fast, so don't leave it too long to book!

In Workshop 1, as well as covering all the very necessary basics (technical loom stuff, warping, throwing and so on), you can also expect to create a piece of handwoven fabric of your very own design by the end of your 3 hours!

The goal for Workshop 1 is to make enough gorgeous, unique woven fabric to make your own useful and beautiful project bag.

For a small additional fee, The Little Grey Girl will transform your hand-woven fabric into a beautiful, zippered project bag.

We will be using 16” Ashford Rigid Heddle looms, which are provided for your use, so all you need is a couple of skeins of DK weight yarn (preferably pre-caked) and approximately 100g of leftover odds and ends of DK weight (or a bit thicker) and you’ll be set. We promise the magic of weaving will have you hooked!!!

The beauty of learning on this loom is that it's so easy and affordable for you to own your own, and continue creating after the workshops. Weaving with hand-dyed yarns, and mixed yarn weights and textures is a very unique and exciting experience.

Experts will be at hand to help with yarn and colour selection.

      • Class Duration:
3 hour class, 2pm - 5pm. Please arrive on time to choose your yarn (so we can wind it for you. Or better still, on a pre-class day, so we don't rush your choice.

        Prior Experience:
        None

        Class Materials:
The Loom will be provided for your use. You'll need a couple of skeins of DK weight yarn (preferably pre-caked) andapproximately 100g of leftover odds and ends of DK weight, or thicker. Also a pair of sharp scissors. All items available to purchase in store too.

We suggest you bring a water bottle and pen in case you wish to make notes.

        Other:
Your Ashford loom will be available to purchase at a discounted price after the workshop, should you so wish. The big advantage here is that it will be assembled for you!

We are sorry but we cannot offer refunds on classes if you are unable to attend for whatever reason, unless we are able to refill your spot.

Weaving class takes place upstairs with access via a spiral staircase.

      • About the Teacher:

I bought my first Rigid Heddle Loom some years ago, and have never looked back!  I have a variety of looms at home, but am usually found working on my 48” rigid heddle creating Alchemy Blankets, which are made to commission from people’s leftover yarn and special “memory” yarns.

The magic of the weaving leftover yarns together never fails to amaze and mystify me, hence the name I have given to these blankets.

I love to weave with mixed weights and textures, including roving, chunky yarn, lace-weight yarn and even strips of ribbon and pompoms, and I often make these pieces into bags or project bags for knitting.

Although I have given some thought to moving to a floor loom, I honestly believe that I can weave every type of thing I could wish for on an honest, simple rigid heddle loom. And I can show you how too!
