Absolutely unique, and dyed on the most incredible Organic Merino, Ikat Watercolours has been hand-dyed in Maine using an ancient Ikat technique from Indonesia which involves the loving careful preparation of every single skein prior to saturation in a vat of rich, environmentally-friendly dye.
Soft transitions between two distinct indigo-based hues make this hand-dyed Ikat yarn a joy to knit with. Each skein of our 100% organic Merino yarn is first individually wrapped by hand, then carefully dipped by our master dyer into a vat of all natural dye. When the ties are removed, a striking pattern of resist marks are left behind, creating painterly transitions between rich indigo-based colorways.
Even more eye candy here: Swans Island knitting patterns.
Note: These yarns are dyed using all-natural indigo. It is the inherent nature of naturally dyed indigo yarns to have some “rub off.” Swans Island have done everything possible to minimise this; however, you may experience some color rubbing off on your hands or needles. It is not harmful and will wash off. We recommend using metal needles for projects using indigo-dyed yarns.

Swans Island Company goods begin with natural fibres, sourced to the highest possible standard.
Based on the stunning Maine Coast, Swans Island source much of their fibre from local New England, domestic, family-run farms. Their organic merino from South America has been certified organic by the Global Organic Textile Standard, the world’s leading processing standard for textiles made from organic fibers.
Since each skein is spun and dyed in-house using time-honoured techniques, they are able to create uniquely saturated colourways that can’t be achieved in large-scale dye lots. Many of their yarns are dyed using naturally derived pigments like cochineal, indigo, and madder root.
You'll see that their home in Maine is their biggest design inspiration. Classical, clean, vibrant and natural. Eternally flattering!
- At Swans Island Company, we believe in keeping it simple.
Pure fibers, time-honoured processes, and a commitment to fine craftsmanship are at the heart of everything we do.
Since 1992, we have produced the finest possible textiles and yarns, and we are proud to carry on the tradition of fine American craftsmanship here on the Maine coast.
