This is pure 100% Herdwick yarn. Buttermere is an honest, hardwearing workhorse yarn that's unlike anything else. Produced in intensely limited quantities, this single flock yarn is truly special.
With sheep so famous for their hardiness, you may have guessed that the wool is just the same: rustic, crunchy and packed full of texture, there's absolutely nothing like Herdwick fibre.
By choosing the woollen spinning process, Garthenor were able to keep in all the kemp (coarse fibres that form the outer guard layer of the fleece). As the yarn is worked, worn and washed, the kemp works its way out, and the overall fabric softens and relaxes as a result.
This woollen spun yarn is grown in Berkshire, spun in Cornwall and finished in Ceredigion.
This yarn is definitely NOT soft, but it's incredibly hard-wearing and warm. It will keep going and going, and get softer as it ages.
Herwick is getting more and more difficult to source since the sheep are so uneconomical to keep, so we are thrilled to bits to be able to stock this epic yarn.
Available in 3 undyed solids and a trio of marls, this DK weight yarn is packed full of texture and an amazing sheepy smell.
It's not for everyone, but if you love a cozy yarn prickle and an honest, hard-wearing sheepy yarn for the warmest of jumpers, hats, or thick socks, that will likely outlive you, you won't find better!
It's a rare find, so grab it while you can!

The wonderful mother and son team have produced exclusively certified organic, breed specific UK-made yarns for 20 years. In 2003, they became the first company in the world to produce fully certified organic wool yarns.
Always driven by passion, they believe the yarn they make captures the identity of our landscape.
We LOVE how much love goes into every yarn they produce. They know intimately every single thing about each and every fibre and exactly where it comes from. Garthenor yarns are imbued with integrity you can feel in every skein.
Climate Positive For every skein of yarn they produce, they offset about twice the carbon footprint through sustainable, ethical initiatives, as well as responsible farming practices.
They also offset their own footprint - things like travelling to shows, electricity usage and heating.
When paired with uncompromising animal welfare, traceability and organic certification throughout, they are confident of doing our bit to help the planet.
