Notify me when this product is available:

  • Sunday 2nd Feb 2020: 2pm - 5pm

In this specialist darning class, Tom (aka @tomofholland) will teach you how to repair holes that are too large for the regular stocking darn.

You will be taught two vital techniques:

    - the web darn, which starts with laying down a foundation in sewing thread and then stitches are replicated using a darning needle
    - knitting in a patch, with various options on how to attach the patch to the edges of the hole

Attendees will take home a comprehensive hand-out, a darning needle, and the skills to repair large holes!

Please be sure to read the Pre-Class Info!

Topics discussed will include introduction to The Visible Mending Programme with examples, hints and tips for repair and care of knitwear, darning techniques and their advantages and disadvantages, discussion of repair approach for items brought in by students.

  • Class Duration:
3 hours, starting 2pm sharp. Please arrive promptly.

    Pre-Class Homework:
Students will need to knit a swatch to practice on. They will also need to bring the knitting needles used, and any left-over yarn.

    Skill Level & Prep Work:
Students need to be able to knit and graft (as for closing the toe of a sock.) Students are encouraged to bring some things that need fixing.

    Class Materials:
All class materials will be provided, including handouts, yarns, threads and darning needle. Please bring your own water bottle/drink, pen for note taking and scissors.

We are sorry but we cannot offer refunds on classes if you are unable to attend for whatever reason, unless we are able to refill your spot.
  • About Tom van Deijnen:

Tom van Deijnen is a self-taught knitter from The Netherlands, who now lives in Brighton, UK.

Technique, tradition and narrative inform much of his work. Under the moniker @tomofholland, he explores these aspects of knitting and shares his enthusiasm with other knitters through exhibitions and workshops.

Hand-knitting has also raised his awareness of the meaning behind garments and his relationship with the clothes he wears. This has led to the Visible Mending Programme, through which Tom provides mending and repair inspiration, skills and services.
